The arrival of a new school year brings with it not only the return to school but also the start of a new opera season in the Spanish capital. The Teatro Real has already announced its programme, which includes works by composers such as Handel, Mozart, Falla and Verdi. In this post we’ll take a look at the operas we’ll be able to enjoy this autumn.
This opera kicks off the new season at the Teatro Real, and tells the story of Adrienne Lecouvreur, a leading actress of the Comédie Française who died in 1730 in mysterious circumstances. Since its premiere in 2010, this melodrama of jealousy and revenge produced by David McVicar has toured the world’s leading theatres. It will be on stage from the 23rd of September to the 11th of October.
One of Handel‘s least appreciated operas until it was performed at the Flyndebourne Festival in 1996, this work tells the story of the martyrdom of Theodora of Antioch, a victim of Diocletian’s religious persecutions, and explores sensitive issues such as religious fanaticism and bullying. Katie Mitchell is responsible for the stage direction of this renewed Theodora in a co-production of the Teatro Real with the Royal Opera House in London. It can be seen from the 11th to the 23rd of November, though only on odd-numbered days.
The last opera to be staged in the final quarter of the year is also dedicated to a woman, Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, in a work by Gaetano Donizetti that portrays the confrontations between this queen and her executor, Elizabeth I. The new production also bears the stamp of David McVicar and will keep us hooked from the overture until the tragic final scene. It can be seen from the 14th to the 30th of December.
Opera for the little ones
The Real Teatro de Retiro is also offering a varied programme for children, with works such as Puss in Boots ( 12th, 13th, 19th and 20th of October), The Child and the Spells (9th, 10th, 16th, 17th, 23rd and 24th of November) and The Christmas Concert ( 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th of December).
This programme is sure to delight opera lovers, and should you happen to be one of them and are looking for a hotel less than 10 minutes from the Teatro Real, discover the fantastic offers we have in store for you at Hotel Moderno.
