Madrid’s markets have evolved and turned into real gastronomic heavens, breathing new life into many of them and filling them once more with visitors and a wide variety of foods. In this post we’ll explore the city’s most popular and authentic markets.
San Miguel Market
The market that set this new trend of incorporating gastronomic features. Located in the heart of Madrid, San Miguel Market is now known as the city’s most important gastronomic temple. It is visited by more than 10 million people a year. Its highlights include the tacos and margaritas made by chef Roberto Ruíz (Europe’s first Michelin-starred chef specialising in Mexican food); the innovative proposal of MozHeart, which offers more than 30 types of tapas featuring fresh Italian Mozzarella Fior di Latte; the 200 cheese references available in Mya Valdos; or the delicious and extravagant homemade ice creams of Rocambolesc, headed by thrice-Michelin-starred chef Jordi Roca, among others.
San Antón Market
Located in the neighbourhood of Chueca, this is another of the Madrid’s most popular markets. On the first floor are the more traditional stands, offering gourmet products such as cured meats, fish, quality hamburgers, fruits and vegetables. On the second floor is a pub / wine bar, and ten takeaway and live cooking stands, among which are particularly noteworthy the Asian food of Akma Mix, the scrumptious desserts of Delicious Coffee, Puturrú de Foie, and the tapas of 7Delicatessen, among others.
The last floor is one of the most charming parts of the market thanks to the restaurant La Cocina de San Antón, where you can eat products previously purchased in the stands on the first floor, or sit on its pleasant terrace to enjoy a delicious cocktail under the Madrid sky.
La Paz Market
The most gourmet market on the list, and one of the city’s most iconic destinations. It was erected in 1882 in the heart of the Salamanca neighbourhood. The market preserves its iron structure and its interior space is picturesque and welcoming. With about 60 outlets, here we can find a wide variety of delicatessen. What’s more, in La Paz Market we can enjoy one of the best omelettes in Madrid in the restaurant Casa Dani, which makes about 400 omelettes a day. We can also relish a delicious fish fried on the spot at Freiduría de pescado Oñate or try one of the wonderful desserts of Mamá Framboise.
Chamberí Market
This traditional market is named after the neighbourhood it’s in. It is also one of the markets that has been most heavily renovated in recent years. Now, Chamberí Market has more of a modern look, even though its more than 50 stands still remind us of times past while offering a wide variety of high-quality food products. There’s also a gym called Maná on the first floor, which even has a pool.
One of its main novelties is its gastronomic area, called La Chispería, where you can enjoy a wonderful selection of national and international cuisine at places like Mexita, Sake-ria or Cannoli.
Four markets where you can live a unique gastronomic experience featuring both local and exotic flavours in a traditional market atmosphere. If you want to check out these four proposals, don’t miss our offers in the heart of Madrid.
