Gran teatro en miniatura

Tickets cost 4€ and they give the option of seeing plays such as Indurain, in which an up-and-coming figure of women’s sport must do a doping test after a cycling race. The plays deal with modern and everyday topics, designed to impact the spectator directly, combining comedy with doses of politics or social topics. More information on the programme, here.

As well as these small venues, Madrid also has a series of important alternative theatres, such as Puerta Estrecha, on Calle Amparo, 94, in the Lavapiés district, whose entrance hall with colourful decoration is worth a visit in itself. On show, you can see plays chosen with good criteria such as Extracction, based on a text by Alejandra Pizarnik, or The Monkey, based on an unsettling work by Franz Kafka.

A theatre that opened its doors recently where the old Teatro de Cámara Anton Chejov used to be (now moved to Plaza de Castilla) is Teatro del Arte, also known as TDA, located on the corner of Calle San Cosme and Calle San Damián, close to the Reina Sofía Museum. In front, at number 16, you can find La Gatomaquia, a semi-clandestine bohemian space where you can see classical music performances, poetry and songwriter recitals and, of course, theatre plays.

Write down the name of Teatro La Guindalera. Always on the edge of closing due to the delicate situation in the culture scene, it is one of the best smaller theatres due to its excellent programme.

Madrid’s cultural scene is rich and varied and theatre is one of its main protagonists. At Hotel Moderno we offer you a fantastic atmosphere of art and culture in a privileged location, a stone’s throw from the Puerta del Sol.
