El Madrid de los Austrias

You can start the route on the aforementioned Plaza Mayor and exit through Arco de Cuchilleros, to then go on Calle Toledo all the way to Plaza de la Puerta Cerrada and from there go up either Cava Alta or Cava Baja, where there are many bars that invite you in for a drink. You can carry on towards Plaza de los Carros and Plaza de la Paja and then take on the different winding streets and slopes that you come across. At Plaza de la Paja there is a hidden park of small size, Jardín del Príncipe Anglona, of unique charm.

Not far away is Café del Nuncio, with the traditional architecture of a local café, leaning out onto Calle Segovia, with its famous viaduct that saw many damned poets jump from it in the early 20th century. You can then turn towards the route to the Palacio Real, getting lost in streets like Calle Gómez de Mora, which takes to the beautiful square of Plaza del Conde de Barajas, to then come out to the Calle Mayor. We then look for Calle Senderos de Luzón, which takes us to Calle Santiago and then come out to Plaza de Ramales, under which they say are the remains of the famous painter Diego de Velázquez. You can discuss the subject on the pleasant bar terraces that are located there before going to the Palacio Real, Plaza de Oriente and Teatro Real, an excellent point to finish this unique route in the heart of Habsburg Madrid.

Hotel Moderno, located a stone’s throw from the Puerta del Sol, is located at the entrance of the Habsburg Madrid and is therefore one of the best options for those who wish to start their sightseeing tour of Madrid in this district.
