With the arrival of the autumn-winter season, Madrid renews all of its leisure programme with many different cultural events, movie premieres, restaurant openings and, of course, new art exhibitions. However, the one opening on October 12th is particularly special because, Alphonse Mucha has arrived in Madrid!
More specifically, it’s arriving at Palacio de Gaviria on Calle Arenal, 9, a wonderful space that until the 24th of September was occupied by an exhibition dedicated to the works of Escher, an exhibition which received such good critiques that it was extended. Let’s hope that Alphonse Mucha has a similar or an even better reception!
From October 12th until February 25th, anyone who wants to enjoy the works of this decorative Czech artist just has to head over to the aforementioned palace for the exhibition, which includes some of the greatest Art Nouveau works in the world.
This magnificent Mucha exhibition has taken place thanks to the collaboration with the Mucha Foundation and Arthemisia, who guided by curator Tomoko Sato have chosen Madrid as the best city to diffuse the Czech artist’s work.
Alphonse Mucha has arrived in Madrid! And you can get to the city centre easily with the L2, L5 and R metro lines which stop at Ópera or the L1, L2 or L3 lines which stop at Sol.
You can also get there easily by bus on lines 3, 5, 15, 20, 50, 51, 52 and 53.
The exhibition comprises more than 200 works by Mucha, which include Self-Portrait (1899), France Embraces Bohemia (1918) or the world-famous La Princesse Lointaine (1896), which has actress Sarah Bernhardt as its main feature.
Other works in the exhibition that will delight art and Mucha fans are By force towards freedom, with love towards unity! (1910-1911) and the study for The Age of Wisdom (1936-1938).
If you are not too familiar with Mucha’s work, don’t worry, you just have to let yourself be swept away by the beauty of its seductive women, its innovative typographies and its jewellery designs, a true reflection of Czech and Slavic influences.
Exhibition opening times are from Sunday to Thursday, from 10.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.
