There’s a day you can visit every one of Madrid’s museums for free: Museum Day. This year it will take place on Saturday 18 May. This latest edition of this famous event commemorates the role of museums in modern society, which have evolved from static institutions to interactive spaces.
If you want to make the most of this day, here are the four museums you cannot miss during your itinerary:
One of the largest art galleries in the world opens the doors to its temporary exhibitions and permanent collections for a day, free of charge. What’s more, younger visitors will receive a gift during their visit: a family pass so they can come back another day.
This museum also offers free entry to two of its most praised exhibitions: “Toulouse-Lautrec and the spirit of Montmartre” or “Opera. Passion, power and politics”. You can also enjoy its special programme with activities such as the Laureana Fado micro-concert or the guided tours of the CaixaForum building and its vertical garden.
On 17 May you can lounge on the patio of the Nouvel Building in the Queen Sofia Museum during a fantastic concert from 7:00 to 22:00 featuring prestigious national artists such as Vetusta Morla, La Casa Azul, Amaia, Niño de Elche, Axolotes Mexicanos, Carolina Durante or Mikel Erentxun. Furthermore, in the Sabatini garden, from 21:00 to midnight, electronic music will take centre stage with performances by María Taosa, Rodrigo Suárez, Laura Martínez, José Manuel Sebastián, Alex García and Carolina Alba.
And if you only want to visit the museum for free, you can do so on 17-18 May, including access to the permanent collection and its temporary exhibitions.
New technologies are also the stars of the day. Coinciding with this celebration and under the slogan #laluzdelapintura, the Thyssen Museum offers, with Endesa’s sponsorship, a virtual reality experience on 15-19 May. By donning some immersive glasses, we can travel from the fields of Auvers as painted by Van Gogh to Mondrian’s streets of New York. Without a doubt, a unique adventure and a new way to enjoy art.
If you want to visit the 4 museums, prepare an itinerary to not miss any of the activities happening on Madrid’s Museum Day.
